Those unfamiliar with my fanfic will be like "WTF" at Link's form (hence why I did the canon version) but there is a deep story behind how he came to be this way and it ties into the Oni/fierce deity mask.

Note: I keep Sheik's gener undefined in the fanfic (It is very interesting writing this so as to never use he, her, him etc) so both sides of the gender debate can enjoy the story equally.

Link knows full well that Sheik is really Zelda in this picture and his emotions are for his princess.
Since my story ties into Majora's Mask so much I opted to claim that Zelda uses a mask to take on the form of Sheik to surpass the limits of her own body since she was "bred of roytalty not warriors".
And I did more than just paired Link and Zelda together in my story, I created depth to how they came to be together.

“Zelda!” he said not caring that she wanted to be called by the warrior’s name in this form.

Link scooped up Sheik and propped the red eyed warrior in his lap and over one arm. The Sheikah tried to breath slow and calm for now it felt as if the blade had in fact nicked a lung…

“Can you take the mask of?” Link said
“No!” the voice of the sage said he came closer, shading them from the glow of sunset “That will only worsen things. Have you forgotten? Wounds sustained with a mask stay with you when it is removed. Sheik’s body is stronger than Zelda‘s, she has more of a chance in this form.”


They held eachother under the glow of twilight forming around them as the sky faded from the color of flames to the color of night, the skyline adorned with white stars and pink clouds. The beauty of the world around them seemed to both mock and compliment their situation, twilight comes just before the death of the sun’s light… and Zelda was now caught in a twilight of her own.

“..Link” Sheik said with a tremor of pain coughing up blood.
“shhhhh don’t talk, I don’t want to loose you, I can’t loose you… My princess…please don’t leave me…” Link said drawing his loved one within the form of Sheik closer to his heart, brow resting against the Sheikah’s dandelion gold hair, eyes closed. Zelda looked up at him through the warrior’s deeply sad red eyes.
